That is true. In a 4L80-E the depressions the checkballs sit in are in the case and above the separator plate. Dropping the plate without all the checkballs going everywhere is takes steady hands. They will be just sitting in their seats in the plate. (In a 4L60-E all the checkballs except one are in depressions in the valvebody and below the separator plate.) Reinstallation in an 80 is not too bad because you can use little gobs of Vaseline to hold them in place. That works as long as the valvebody is lifted straight into place without shifting around. Installing two temporary studs into the case bolt holes helps with alignment.

Id like to see your TQ vs shift pressure table on the 1-2 shift once you get it the way you want. Also your shift rpm at wot for 1-2. Another member told me he had to set his to shift at 5500 to get it to shift at 5800-6000. Mine was bouncing of the rev limiter or fuel cutoff when I had the shift rpm set to 6000 with fuel cutoff at 6200. I lowered th shift rpm to 5800 and it didnt help. I am going to drop it to 5500 whan I get back and see. Just wondering if this is a 4L80E common issue. I have the shift speeds set to 0 so its not part of the equation.
