If you don't keep the engine compartment clean, doesn't the orange start looking ratty really quick?

nope not really. the buggy sits outside uncovered most of the time and the elements and also dust and stuff hasn't effected it yet. you can easily wipe it off though

The VHT is TOTALLY different from any other engine paint or normal paint out there. I used some of that stuff they sell at autozone cant think of the name right now originally and it chipped like a ****. I sprayed my block down with carb cleaner and a wire brush to get all the old **** that was falling off, off the block then painted it with one can of VHT. Three hours later(paint wasnt cured well yet) I started cleaning the rotating assembly in my block with carb cleaner and as you can see in teh pics where the black drips of carb cleaner ran onto the paint and it aint even hurt at all. VHT engine paint owns all IMO Plus when you get it powder coated you are going to have to machine a bunch of surfaces to get it back right to where you can use it not to mention I spent 6 bucks in paint and an evening of my time whereas with powder coat who knows how long it will take for them to do it and will cost you atleast 100 bucks, Im sure it would be more since one wheel around here goes for 80. Alot of the old school guys around here stand behind it, Ill let you know how it stands up to my lazyness(not cleaning).

The GM572 crate motor blocks are powdercoated if that tells you anything. Powdercoat can stand up to the heat if its done right. If you have the money I'd go that route. If not it's hard to beat VHT. The only thing I don't like about VHT is it isn't really a true shade of chevy orange, but I'm a picky bastard. The duplicolor engine enamel is a closer match IMO but isn't quite as durable. VHT also makes a kit that has high temp primer, high temp paint, and high temp clear as a packege that will hold up even longer than just a straight painted block.

Here's the duplicolor engine enamel on the the 355 for my Nova for reference:
