Ok when you guys are driving, do any of you hear really fast ticking sound? I know I get one when the truck starts cold and it goes a way. When I am driving and I am trying to accelerate in fourth gear it makes a really fast ticking sound. Some guys here might have described it as a "rain" or "water dropping" sound before. I have used 5w30 since I got the truck and I don't have any exhaust leaks. Any help??

What you describe is an exhaust leak. At cold, when all the metals are contracted, a leak ... after warm up, the metals are expanded,; closing the gap/leak. at extreme torque (4th gear punch) exhaust pressure is maxxed, and pushing out the leak. my .02
Hire a midget and have him ride under the hood, to find the leak ....

Are you sure it's not detonation? Does it sound more like marbles are jumping around in your engine? The fact that you said you can hear it under acceleration in 4th gear really makes me suspect detonation.

I have a loud (to me) tick from the passenger valve cover area but I cannot hear it above idle.

Sounds like the good ol' faithful lifter noise that GM is in such denial about.

Yea I am still under warranty so I am trying to get all the bugs out while its only a $100 deductible . I dunno I will mention it if I wind up taking the truck in. Its never given me any problems its just one of those little things that bothers you about the truck

the problem is when you DRIVE it to the dealer, it'll be warm = no noise (if its the lifter). Have a buddy tow you there, so you can cold start it for them, its UNDENIABLE at that point.

Sounds like the lifters to me. Get a huge cam, and Rhoads lifter, they make noise, but at least theres a reason

I was thinking detonation/pinging too. It should increase as load increases.



The only lifter noise I've heard from mine is an occasional ticking at warm idle. No pattern to it...it'll tick a little,stop,maybe do it again some. That's just the lifter roller interacting with the cam lobe from what I've heard.

These aren't your granfather'sl lifters. If they're ticking at start up it's only a split second due to low oil pressure. And if you're low on oil, then it's that.
Most likely exhaust but you say it's not... There's a guy on the board here who was ready to swap lifters a couple weeks ago due to his noisy HEADERS. He will remain anonymous and no, it's not me!
It could also be a burnt plug with too much gap.
If you don't get the noise while revving in nuetral, it's exhaust. Anywhere from header/manifold bolts to O2 sensors.

When do you all suggest changing out the spark plugs?? I have 63k right now
