Default gas gauge?

when i make a trip (bout 70-80 miles) and i leave with a full tank of gas, i get to my destination and the needle has barely moved.

however, if i leave with like 1/2 a tank, when i reach my destination i've used significantly more gas.

the trip is the same distance each week, usually in the same weather, and the same traffic conditions. is my truck burning more gas? or is my guage messed up? or is it supposed to be work like that? if its supposed to work like that, why?

Not sure why it happens, but it is normal. Every vehicle I have drove has done this. Takes forever to get to half a tank, then it goes to empty very quickly.
I would like to know the why it does this though. Anyone know?

IMO... I think it does that because when you fill up your tank, the needle goes above the full mark. On mine it takes about 50 miles to get back to the full mark from being above that.

01 silverado, thats not exactly what i'm talking about it. it takes me as much time to burn up the tank for full to 3/4 or 3/4 to 1/2 as it does to go from 1/2 to E. like i burn up the second half of the tank almost as fast as one quarter of the top half.

also, does anyone know why this happens.

truck has about 1/4 tank left. i shut it off. next time i start the truck up its almost empty and the low fuel light is on. immediately turn the truck off and back on and the guage is back to near a 1/4 tank. doesn't do this everytime but has happened to me 2 or 3 times now.

is something wrong or do i just have one of those gremlins like Neil got?

Mine does the same thing on start-up... When the gauge reads empty. It also does that if you are low on gas, put the truck in neutral or park and rev it... it immediately jumps down and the light comes on. I guess its normal

When I would pull my trailer, I would leave on full, drive 200 miles and be on 1/2, stop turn the truck off, get a beer , get back in and it would be damn near empty. I think it may have something to do with pressure in the tank. I really just don't know. Mine does the same thing as yours, but I can go 300+ miles on the first 1/2, (not pulling a trailer) then stop and shut down , come back and start it and be down to 1/4. Overall I avg 425 per tank.

i dont think the guage is ment to be that accurate. like the temp guage every body gets in a hissy ovet after they change their t stats. the guage is probably setup to show gas 1/2gas and no gas. in my opinion the most of the guages are idiot guages and not ment to be 100% accurat. as for the light comming on it happens to me and i think everyone else. the only thing i have noticed is the truck sitting at diffrent angles causes it to come on.

Reffering to what greg said... i know the 96+ vortech trucks hace to have a certain amount of presure in the tank. Knowing this because a friend didnt tighten his gas capp down, drove a few miles and then a SES light poped up. I doubt it's your gas cap though I was reffering to what greg said aout the tank pressure. Personally i think all of the 99+ trucks came with their own personal ghost to screw things up and **** us off..

you wana talk about ghost and the gas gauge, i have the top of the list.

when ever i fill up my truck with a fresh tank of gas, the fule gauge goes to "E". when i shake the truck from side to side, it trips back to normal, saying that i am full. it will do this until i burn about 50-60+ miles, then it just acts normal. i do believe i know what the problem is, but the truck is out of warenty, and i dont want to pay to have the gas tank droped, all that labor caust a big fat one. i can deal with the spooky gas gauge, i just use the odometer.

to answer the question about burning gas, i have heard from many people, and personal experience. the gauge is set to burn the first half of your tank slower than the second half. it is more like the 1/2 point is more like the 1/3 or 1/4 point. and the first half burned is more like burning 2/3-3/4 of your tank. dont ask why, thats just the way it seams. some people just like to mess with our minds.

hope that helps,

Zach
