Default Gauge cluster problems in a 2000 GMC

My dad's 2000 GMC ECSB has a shade over 62,000 miles and has recently started to act up.

The gas gauge will read incorrectly intermittently, and the low fuel light will come on as well. This happens at no particular fuel level either.

More recently, last night while driving the "security" light came on while he was driving on the freeway. Out of nowhere.

Any ideas as to what could be the cause? I know we have some techs on here, could you shed some light on this situation?

Thanks.

Have you done any engine work to your truck lately? Have you checked all your grounds? particullarly the one from the Firewall to the engine behind the left cylinder head. I had a similar problem and that ground was loose. when I swaped in the LS1 I put the ground to the head and it wasnt grounding right. my windows rolled up slowly and my guages would go crazy sometimes. security light, fuel guage , air bag light, temp guage, oil pressure guage and speedo would freak out. hope this helps.

All that has been done to the truck is oil changes, and a new battery last year, which is what throws me for a loop.

I have heard about the gas gauge going bad. Is there a known fix, or do you have to replace the whole bucket in the tank?

I believe that you can get the sending unit separately, I remember reading about it at GMTrucks.com...I don't have a part number for you though

Mine has started to act up also, but with different symptoms. I have a set of silverado SS gauge with the trans temp gauge, and noticed that the trans temp gauge is not working. Also, mainly in the cooler weather, it squeaks like hell going over any sort of a rough patch of road.

Weird. Driving in dad's truck last night, I noticed that the passenger airbag cover is loose and is squeaking now.
