Default Gauges go off when turning steering wheels

My friend has a 2000 silverado, sometimes when he turns the steering , the gauge cluster turns off, then back on. We already changed the alternator thinking it would help but it did not. What could be the problem?

I would check the ignition switch and the multifunction switch in the steering column. Possible loose connection, broken or melted wires.
