Default How wide of tire can I go on stock 16x6.5

I am wanting to leave my truck as stock looking as possible, down to the rims, but would like to run a bit of a wider tire on the rear. Right now I am running stock size 255/70-r16. This gives me about a 10inch wide tire. I was thinking a 275-285??

your limiting factory is mainly your fenders in this case, theres guys running 285-295-305-and 315 on stock rims with no problem,

I dunno if I'd go anymore over than what you got on a 6.5" width. Anymore and I'd think you'd start getting some deformation as the sidewall bends way in. The alloy rims are 7.5" wide and can sometimes be found decently cheap.

:edit
the 17" alloys are 7.5" wide. Dunno if the 16" alloys are any different, but I think all the steelies were 6.5" wide?

To clear up any confusion....the aluminum 16's are 7" wide and the steelie 16's are 6.5" wide. I've had 275/60-16 Toyo Proxes on my truck for about 20,000 miles and never had a problem with them. You could probably run 305 tires but I wouldn't recommend it. Here are the Toyos on my truck:

Thanks for your help guys. I was looking at M&H Drag Radial Tires on jegs for about 192 a piece, 275/55R16.

That's a really short tire. It will not look right if your truck is stock height. My 275/60 tires are about 28.5" tall, which leaves alot of ugly fender gap. Just my opinion....

I run 275/70-16's on my truck in the winter...used to have 285/75-16 AT's on there before I lowered the truck, with no rubbing at stock height.

I saw a guy around here with some 295/60/16s on stock aluminum wheels. Looked good. I couldn't believe they fit on there.
