Should be a pretty good truck. It might burn a little oil between changes, but that's to be expected with a big block. I've heard that some of those Vortec big blocks have the same leaky intake manifold gasket problems that the small blocks have. There are better gaskets now that prevent this. Check the oil & coolant to see if they might be mixing together. Look for leaks around the transfer case and front axle outputs and give the 4x4 system a good workout to see if anything sounds/feels funny. Trans should be fine unless it has done heavy towing 24/7. Other than that, I'd just flush all the fluids & filters and drive the crap out of it.

Changing the intake manifold gaskets is not that bad, just a little time consuming beings that you need to remove the upper portion before you can pull the lower. Just be a little careful with the EGR pipe where it attaches to the intake (it's been there a lot of years). Just use silicone on the end rails of the block under the intake like you would on a small-block (we don't need no stinkin gaskets). You need to mark the distributor before you pull it. Most definitely while you have the upper intake off, change the cap and rotor as it is way easier to access with nothing in the way and you would have to do it by feel if you decided to wait and do it later. It also isn't a bad time to change the fuel pressure regulator as it's under the upper manifold, but beings that pulling the upper is so easy I would probably wait until it needed it. They are really pretty reliable old beasts and I would probably start with a little lower offer. We sold my wife’s '98 crew-cab dually just this last year for $6500 and it was a pretty nice truck, while we didn't have a hard time selling it, there just isn't an over-abundance of folks looking for gas drinking dinosaur.
