That may be likely.

...I was advocating a $7 HF stethoscope. The sound did seem louder to me on the underside, maybe closer to bellhousing?

I've had the starter bendix fail where the drive gear could move forward on the shaft and make contact with the flex plate.

It's funny you bring that up because I had some starter issues the other day, would go to crank and nothing. No clicks just silence.

I haven't looked at it yet. My shop is still occupied.

Almost sounds like a leaky exhaust gasket.
