Default Looking for opinions on trading trucks, 1500hd

With a growing family, we may outgrow the ext. cab 2001 that I've been driving. The 60e has made it this far (~150k) but I'm worried it won't go much further; dropping $1500 into a truck that's worth $5000 and then trade it away not long after doesn't sit well with me. Also, the 2001 is starting the common rust problem on the rockers. It's not bad now but I expect some holes in the rocker w/in a few years.

So, one idea is to go to a 03-07 1500hd with the 6.0, 80e, hydroboost brakes, same size bed that I have now so I can reuse my bedrug and fold-a-cover, the crew cab and a loaded interior. I found a 05 1500hd in my area, 95k miles for $16k.

Goals are to keep this for several (10) years and not have to deal with expensive drive train repairs or the common rust problems that the 99-02 models have. And hopefully add a maggie in there somewhere for some fun.

Any opinions on a 2005 1500hd? My only concern is that body style isn't as good looking as some other years of the silverado and I'm hoping it will fit in the garage.

Thanks for reading and giving any and all opinions on this matter!

I did the same thing in October and I am very happy with my decision, I had already broken the trans once and was a little gun shy about putting more power through the 4l60 so I traded up. I have the same future plans of some type of fi.

Your decision is always up to you a 1500hd loaded would be a good deal but its another payment to have, I had this same decision back in august when my 96 burnt to the ground, get a bigger truck or just get a cheaper one to play with with a low payment till paid for, I bought us a family car in febuary to use and having a better gas mileage family mobile then a truck, if what you got is paid for I would get a car gas isnt gonna get much cheaper, but its your choice

Well that truck didn't pan out. The interior was awesome but the body wasn't quite up to my standards. I'll keep my eye out for good deals but since I don't have to sell right now, I'll wait for the right one to come along.

It was interesting though, the salesman was pretty confused that I was looking at an HD and didn't have plans for towing. I said that I was interested in the beefed up drive train. He seemed convinced that the 5.3 was the better motor, that he had in his Avalanche. I chose the HD for the 6.0, 4l80e, hydroboost, bigger axle, and 6.5 ft bed.

$16k for nearly 100000 miles is way too much anyhow. I bought my 05 1500HD over a year ago with 55K miles for 15 grand so its all good anyhow. Mind you used trucks here are pretty worthless because every kid and their dog just buys new.

A 1500HD is a light duty 2500 so in addition to what you mentioned it has a heavier frame than a half ton ( larger c channel) and the 9.25" ifs front diff if it's a 4X4.

The salesman was trying to make a sale so setting his opinion to ignore, which I am sure you did.

Beyond using the 246 t case like a half ton they share nothing in common with a 1500 series truck underneath. I would try and find 4.10 gears over 3.73's myself but some people get it in their head that the 3.73 offers better fuel economy. My experience shows its about exactly the same regardless and the 4.10 offers a lot better punch especially in the 80E's tall first gear. But if you are just an empty pickup, fully tuned the 3.73's aren't that bad either and getting close to 100 mph for the second gear shift puts you in a good spot on highway rolls, lol.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I wish I could find a truck with only 55k for 15 grand. I'm going to keep looking but I'm not expecting to find that around here. There aren't even that many 1500HDs around when you actually start looking for them. The sales guy said that if you look for a truck with 105-110 thousand miles, the price drops off pretty quick.
This truck did have the 4.10s, which I wasn't expecting. And he mentioned that the it had the auto 4x4 which was supposedly different than what the 1500s have (his words). Does that mean a different transfer case or still the same?

Lol on the salesman advising you to get a 5.3 because it's better. When I was shopping for a new truck, the salesman tried to convince me how great his personal 4.8 with a pushbutton t-case was just so I would buy the used 4.8 4x4 CCSB they had on the lot. Lol at salesman.

Also, the 1500HD is only a couple fries short of a 2500HD; have you considered those just to open up your options a bit? You should be able to beat that price and mileage as well even with a crewcab 2500HD, and it does give you more options for competitive pricing and trucks on the market.

Exact same 246 transfercase as a half ton..... well I guess beyond the splines on the hub where the transmissions input shaft goes in accomodating the 80E. It'snot until you go with the 2500HD that you get either the 261 ( floor shift) or 263 ( electronic shift). Yuck on your guys prices though. I wouldn't pay $12k for an 05 with 95K on it...... probably more like $10K. But I notice used commands a lot more in the US than it does locally to me....

2500HD as mentioned is another option as well. I doubt it will be any cheaper per say, and then you get a larger frame again ( the rear section under the bed only is 2 "taller, under the cab is identical with the mounts welded on 2" higher) 14 bolt FF diff and the afforementioned 261/263 t cases. You can't go wrong with either. I like that the 1500HD and 2500LD are lower to ground to be honest. I work out of mine and even being 6'2" the lower bed height is nice. But since I am looking for a second truck myself currently, I am looking at both 1500HD's and 2500HD's.

I have looked at the 2500HD a little. There are definitely a lot more of them availalbe than the 1500HD. I guess I am a little worried about going TOO over the top with a heavy duty truck, but I'm already looking at a 1500HD that I don't necessarily need, so stepping up to the 2500HD shouldn't be a whole lot different. I have such a short drive to work everyday that the truck barely gets to temperature and my mileage is about 12 back and forth to work, I figure it won't make much difference with a bigger truck.

There is a 2500Hd around for $15,9 @ 91k. Looks clean from the pictures, but they always do.

Yes a photo can hide a million scratches, lol. I keep coming up bust because I am being so picky. I want a cloth seat, bose, buckets console, digital climate control 05-07 GMC with 4.10's and low miles...... It doesn't exist, lol. GMC's are almost always 3.73 for whatever reason.

But I am not in a hurry so I can keep looking. Find some leather Chev's with 4.10's, but I will just keep going. I just texted a guy about a nice 75K mile 05 GMC 1500HD he is asking 13K obo for,and sure enough........ 3.73 gears. Yes I can regear it, but I can never fix the 7900 lb tow rating it gets, whereas the identical truck with 4.10's gets 9900...... Thanks GM.
