Default low fuel light help

ok., i have tried to do a search. but i couldnt find the info i wanted.
i have a 1999 4.8l 4x4 chevy silverado.
it has 64k on it. i bought it used. but here is whats happening. i can have like 3/4 tank of gas and look down and the low fuel light is on and the gas gauge will be reading way past empty. like its not even working. it will sometimes pop back up in a minute and the light will go off. and sometimes it will stay on until i shut the truck off and restart it. it does it on full, 1/2 tank all around. it has only dont it like 10 times. but im worried that its just going to completley go out. thanks for your help. larry

Looks like you need a new fuel level sensor. Part number is 89060640. Mounts on the side of the pump. Very common problem.

Do you have anyway to check for codes?? I would be very interested in knowing if you have any stored. I hope you figure it out, cause mine is doing the same thing. I already tried another sender (although it was used) and it didn't fix a thing. Here is a link to my post about it https://ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=207436

On my brothers 01 Tahoe, he had to replace a sensor inside of the fuel tank. I dont know if this is the same thing you are talking about since you said it mounts on the side of the pump. But I hope it helps

I drove mine for the first time yesterday since the prob started (has just been sitting in the garage. Everytime it goes to empty and the low fuel light comes on, it sets a code 300 and 463. If I clear the codes it will immediately start working again, or I can wait for what seems to be a random amt of time and it will start working again on its own. I ordered a new sender from the stealer yesterday, but it will be over a week before I have time to work on it.
