Motor Swap Questions? 84 caprice to 86 Blazer
Hey everyone! This is my first post on the site. I have a question about a motor swap that I am going to be doing in the near future. Currently I have an 86 blazer with a 383 that I am going to be pulling out. I want to put a used motor in the blazer and sell it. I found an 84 Chevy Caprice at a local salvage yard that I am thinking about swaping in it. I will have to smog the blazer in California when it is all done, so that is my biggest constraint. The 86 Blazer also has an electronic feedback carburetor, but I am not sure if the 84 Caprice does or not.
I have been told so far the as long as the dipstick is on the passenger side, and all of the brackets are okay, then I should be good to go. I would like to know if anyone knows how similar a 350 in an 84 Caprice would be to the 350 in my blazer as well as how easy or difficult the swap would be. Thanks a lot for any info! ~ Mike

Should be the same as long as the dipstick is on the same side...except I thought in Cali you could only use a engine newer than the year of your vehicle. I could be wrong though. As far as the carb you could just swap intakes and carbs. Good luck

Technically you are suposed to you an engine newer or the same year as yours, but from what I heard, thats usually checked only when swapping in a motor that wasnt available form the factory. Other than that, I don't think the visual inspection is too bad. I will be using all of the smog equipment from the 86 Blazer, as well as, most likely, the intake, carb, and air filter stuff. I will go down to the local smog shop to ask them if they would check the block. Thanks for the response.

the water pump will be different, the caprice motor will have a short snout pump, and your blazer will have a long style. Your motors are generally going to be the same. The odd thing about the '86 is that is has the 1-pc rear main as in the '87-'95 engines, but that should not matter to you. Other than that it should be pretty simple, and I do not know much about the electronic feedback carb, if anything i'd take the smog stuff thats on the caprice engine and keep it there when you do the swap.

I'm thinking about going with the caprice motor, but putting the blazer intake, carb, smog equip, and whatever else looks dif. Does anyone know where the engine code is located on the engine? Thanks again.
