I would pull it all apart, have it honed if thats all it needs, get new rings seals, a rebuild seal kit for it, bolts. Have the crank gone over, get the rods shot peened. You already are wanting to add a cam, so no loss there. Have it all refitted, stick it back together, go with it. Thats me if I wanted to get rolling in a quick. Find a set of used heads, either the 317's or ls6. And put that bitch in for not too too much.. Or you could save up and build a nice 370 or 08 out of it.... Either way your into now for money, so scrap it or build it....

Just my personal opinion, but if I pulled the heads off and found something resembling a fungal infection I would have returned the engine. $400 is not a good deal for the mess you got.

he can't return it, it was purchased from a private seller... I would just stick with it man. I'd install piston rings, bearings, main bolts, rod bolts all the stuff you have to replace and run the 243's like hirdlej's running to bump the compression up and whatever cam you choose. That should make for fun truck IMO.

Thanks John, lots of good info and stuff I need to look in to. What does shot peening the rods do? theres no real damage to any of the motor besides the walls need a good cleaning.

alright, just talked to a machine shop known from a guy thru a friend and he tells me if he can ball hone it it'll be about 45 bux, if he has to pass it thru a machine it'll be about 55-65 bux!
So looks like it wont take as long as I thought. Sending a check on friday to hold the trans for me, pick it up mid next month, then blocks off to machine shop

Doing that to the rods, takes the stress out of them, makes them stronger, then stock, it is a cheap trick, to getting a stronger rod..

cool, good to know. I will need to ask about that as well, Thanks.

Quick question, could I benefit from buying a 4" crank?

a 4" crank will make it a stroker. you will have to change rods and pistons. but it would put you over 400 cid
