Default need tips for buying newer truck.....

Like the title says, I am looking for some tips in buying a newer model GM truck.

What year(s) of the 1999 - 2006 style should I stay away from or which of those years has more problems/issues?

What are some of the problem areas of these trucks? What should I lookout for?

I think I like the sierra's better than the silverados. There is no difference between them is there?

I would stay 03 and up, they changed the cranks on the 03s (might be just the 6.0 though, not sure). Find what you want, post up the VIN and someone can get you a service history as well as an active recall list for that specific truck I am sure.

huh? the 99-00 iron 6Ls had longer cranks but he is looking to buy a truck...not an engine.

Personally, I would avoid the 99-00 year models just for small first year production run malfunctions such as fuel gauge sender, locks dont unlock when you put it in park, can't turn off daytime running lamps, seats were updated in 01 iirc...just stupid creature comforts is why i would avoid those years. They all have the 4L60e which tends to break with any amount of power. Also, the carrier in the rear ends tend to break (G80). The front wheel bearing assemblies like to go out as well from what i've personally observed.

03 - 04 had problems with stepper motors in the gauge cluster. If you buy those years check to see if they were replaced. Also, 05 and up (i think) come with oem e-fans.

He wanted tips. How is the crankshaft length comment any different than talking about transmissions or rear ends?

So, how common is the sunset orange metallic color on these trucks? I have found a couple of 2001 z71 slt sierras in SOM but I haven't seen any of these color in person. Does this color look good on them? I know it looks good on the fouth gen fbodies.

Is 150,000 miles extremely high for these trucks? I found a couple that seem to be well taken care of the miles are high.

thanks for the help......

well, if you know how well the LS engines hold up in the camaros, you'll be able to see why some of these engines have well over 200k+ on them and are still holding up fine. My buddy had 225k on his when he swapped it for a 6L and nothing was wrong with it. He even tried his best to hurt the motor before pulling it but he couldn't.

The transmissions are a different story. Depending on how much the truck has been abused, the trans could last into the 100k+ miles but due to the weight of the trucks, the 4L60e is bound to break eventually.

I've seen a few SOM trucks in person and I REALLY liked them. Pictures do that color no justice at all.

Thanks for the advice.....So, the 4l60e's are the sore spots on these trucks just like in the A4 fbodies. How about the rear diff, front diff, and transfer case? How well do those last usually if they are taken care of and not abused? Is there a mileage when those components are probably just plain worn out or can they go for a long time?
