Default New Suburban 20" wheels care?

I always thought they would look good on my truck and they do. But how should I care for them? Are they clear-coated? Polished alluminum? I thought they were clear coated so I tried some wax, didn't really do anything. Back when I used to roll Billet wheels (94-98 when centerlines were tha shiznit) I used Mothers Alluminum and Mag Wheel polish (that stinky white stuff) and it worked great, but these new wheels don't look like polished bare alluminum, they look coated with something clear, and they need to be shined up a little. They are 2008 20" premium Sub wheels, on my 04 Silverado.

So if they are, then I would need to buff/wax them?

Yes but don't power buff them or you risk wearing the finish off the edges. If you do power buff them go easy. A cleaner wax might restore the shine a little.
