Default Noise in engine compartment...

The problem is recently when I start my truck up on cold mornings I hear a chirping/squeeling type noise from the engine compartment (gets the loudest at 1800 rpm). Once the truck warms up (about 5 minutes) the noise goes away. I'm pretty sure its not the belt, sounds more like the idler or an accessory. The only thing I could find was that the idler pulley (below the alt.) has some play in it. The tensioner pulley has no play. BTW the truck has 11400 miles on it.

Have anyone had a similar problem? And what was the cause? Thanks

Jeff

My 99 did the same thing when it had about the same mileage as yours, it was the serp belt tensioner pulley. I just recently replaced the tensioner for the ac belt also for a jackhammer type noise with the ac on.

I told the dealer to look at it today while I was getting the new steering shaft installed. I got the same dealership reply, "didn't hear the noise and the play was in spec." They noted it in their records. We'll see if it gets any worse.

Budhayes3 - So your tensioner pulley was bad? Was there play in it? You/dealership just replaced the pulley, right?

You lost 0.6 sec with a cat back and 27 deg cooler weather? Is Netcong home to any Viet Cong?

Unklej,
there wasn't any play, just the squeak noise. I diagnosed it for them actually, and they just replaced it under warranty (about 4 years ago). I guess it helps that I know the service writer and he trusts my diag. If I remember correctly, they had the part in stock and it was a fairly common repair. (When I went to buy my ac tensioner pulley a few months ago, my buddy in the parts dept told me that they were selling them like hotcakes also.)

Oh yea, both items were complete tensioner assemblies, not just the pulley part.

Shandy294, yep I lost .6 seconds with the catback, better air, and the tonneau cover (don't think the cover did anything). Those were the only differences between the runs.

There may be some viet cong here...not sure...
