Off topic...Need a starter to spin backwards?
Ok, I hope this doesnt get deleted, because it has nothing to do with a truck, v-8 performance, or even a chevy. However, I figure someone around here might know the answer.
I need to get a boat started that has a F*rd 460 engine in it. I have a starter from a 460 truck motor. The starters mount in different directions which means the truck starter will spin the boat motor in the wrong direction. THis is just a 1 time thing, if it runs OK ill buy a new marine starter ($300-$500), but before that happens I need to modify the truck starter to get this thing fired up.
Anybody ever did this, or have any advice before I go tearing into it?
Thanks,
Mike

I think you will have to have the marine starter. A stock starter has a bendex that is only designed to kick out and engage rotating one way. Just switching the cables won't work, there wound to only spin one direction. I can't think of a good way to even jerry rig a starter to spin the other way. is the old starter missing, or just dosn't work. If its there, mabe you can use parts from you truck starter to make the boat start work.

make a bracket to mount it reverse if possible. say if you were looking at it and the starter gear was facing you turn it around and have the back or motor of the started facing you. of coarse you would have to fabricate a bracket.

You might try the old school SBC guys. There was a theory about running the engines in a "reverse" pattern that would increase HP, and I remember lots of the short track and competition guys doing this.
Unfortunately, my memory is not what it once was, sorry I could not be more helpful.
