Oil change intervals
Finally opened and read this thread https://www.performancetrucks.net/fo...d.php?t=365846
Got me wondering (not really just wondering more) what are yalls oil change intervals, and what kind of oil (brand/weight/type) do you use?
I always use Castrol GTX 5w-30 and usually change every 3000 miles. This time I went over and to keep the milage easy to remember I decided to skip it unless the change engine oil light comes on (I know it does great at telling how worn(?) the oil is, but IMO cant tell how dirty it is)
After seeing test where a certain popular synthetic ran a test under simulated driving conditions went 90,000+ miles before starting to show any signs of wear/breakdown/ or viscosity changes. I also know (was very suprised and did argue about it) that Range Rover (Land rover makes them ??) Recomends 100,000 mile oil change intervals, as well as Mercedes Benz, and the new LS7 the LS7 even comes plugged from what I have read.
After seeing the lubrication test where that certain oil went 90k I have thought several times about switching to that synthetic, and changing every 25K or so, just changing my filter/toping off when ever my "check oil level" light comes on or every 5000, or maybe even every 3000 since thats what I do now, and the oil will be staying in longer.
Discuss.

I'm sure that synthetics last a lonnnnggggg time, but I couldn't rest at night knowing my oil had over 3500 miles on it. I use regular old Penzoil usually and aim to change it at 3000 miles, usually going over by no more than 100-200 miles. My 5.3 looked super clean under the valve covers, but I didn't pull the heads off to see what the cylinders looked like. I always have ran dino oil and prob. always will. I think its' a waste to change synthetic at less than 5000 miles, but just can't sleep knowing its' in there. I know Jack ****.

mobil 1 10w30. every 3-5000 miles depending on how it looks. at 3000 if it looks nice and clear ill just swap out the filter. if its dark ill go ahead and change it. it usually goes 5k but every once in a while it will get nasty by 3000 depending on how i drive it.

First of all don't believe everything you read. Who do you know that drives a Land Rover, Mercedes Benz, BMW, or new Corvette Z06, and drives them over 100,000 miles, they propably drive them for 15,000-35,000 miles and they get a new vehicle. The last time I saw a Benz with 100,000 was a late 80s model and was on its last leg.
So when choosing an oil you must think when will I buy another truck or car, if you buy a vehicle every year, f**k it, replace it whenever becaue if the engine fails its not your problem it will be the person who buys the vehicle after you. For me I am over 280,000 miles on my 99 silverado, lets see any Land Rover, BMW, Mercedes, or Corvette with that may miles, and I replace my oil every 3,000 miles with Mobile 1 5w30 and Wix filter, I expect this engine to last until 500,000 miles, unless I decide to replace it sooner. As for cost it is cheaper to maintain my truck than it is to replace it. Replacing a $35,000 truck every 2 years does not make sense to me, that is $175,000 every decade, while maintenance cost $225 per year in oil changes, assume you never drive over 15,000 miles in a year. I have spent a total of $3,600 in oil and filter (that is for 3,000 mile interval) since 2000 when I got my truck vs. $105,000 in a new vechicles for 6 years. In all I bet I have spent a total of $10,000 in complete maintenance for my truck in 6 years.

I know someone with a Range Rover about 60000 miles I think (he was waiting to see what his son wants for graduation before he gets another, ******* spoiled *** kids) but he sole the SL500 after about 2 years and 5000 miles. I was just bringing up the point that thats the manufactures recomendation, I argued with my wife about it, but ate my words when she pulled out the owners manual in the Rover.
