Im not familiar with your gauge, but if it is showing 0.01" like I think it is, that is way too much. GM spec is 0.002" I believe.

Looks like you are measuring .001+ maybe .00125.

I believe you would be ok in that range.

Did you have long Oil galley brushes to clean the block prior to assembly??? 24-36 inches long???

Did you prime the engine by pressurising it with oil prior to cranking it???

What type of assembly lube did you use???

I used graphite assembly lube.

I filled the gallies with assembly lube when installing it. When everything was buttoned up, I put a new tip for gear oil on a qt of oil and squeezed it in the sending unit hole. I filled the filter with oil before spinning it on. I filled it with oil on the engine stand, installed the starter, and cranked it over with a mechanical gauge screwed in to the sending unit threads. It got oil pressure what seemed to be normal. I installed the engine, and with the fuel pump relay unplugged, I cranked the engine over. Unfortunately I can not view the pressure on my dash as the gauge does not register while it is cranking, but I assume it was fine. When I started the engine it built normal pressure quickly.

I have a kit for cleaning the engine that is made from that nylon stuff. I never really liked it as I felt it never got clean enough. That is why I ended up using all that brake cleaner. I will be getting that kit you posted, or I will be using a metal brush before the nylon next time.

From everything I am gathering it was debris in the oil system. I must have missed an area, or it is the shop. It is not uncommon for the shop to be a mess, and my.brothers don't care about anything I have, so they would blow dirt all over the place without thinking twice about it.

Well we are all here to learn, so I must say what I messed up. I put a nick in the crank during some part of the assembly. I didn't notice it, and that took out a bearing. Well then there was debris floating around the oil supply. This is not the first engine I have built, but this is the first time I have ever done this. I am still only making assumptions on how I did it. Thankfully I stopped it early and didn't cause more damage. I will more than likely be putting in an Eagle crank.

Looks like it lines up with an oil galley hole.

The graphite assembly lube you are using, Is it black and from Sta-lube and comes in a large squeeze tube???

If so Do not ever use that stuff again. I put my personal motor together with that stuff and something was in there. I rotated the crankshaft and pulled the 1st main bearing cap off. Something got smashed between the bearing and the crank journal scoring the journal on the crank. I was very careful and clean. It's something about the large bottle and I am convinced that the contamination came from there. I had always used the little tubes in the past on stock stuff at work. Prior to that I had used the Cleveite stuff on my personal stuff but I was all out and nobody had any stock.

I replaced the main bearing set and had the crank polished again...

When I first saw the bearing I thought it was debris trying to come out of the galley. When I turned the crank over I then saw the nicks. I will say I feel bad it happened, bit I am thankful I found the problem. I would have racked my brains out not knowing if it was resolved when putting it back together. I will have to look at my assembly lube to see what exactly it was. I know I got it from NAPA. I won't be touching it for a couple weeks though as I will be going on a well deserved vacation.

dang sucks to hear man but you have plenty of time before the track opens to build it back up and get everything up to snuff.
