Power Steering Pump Whine
hey guys, with this cold front that has taken over the US, it has brought us in Colorado some pretty cold temps(-18F during day w wind chill). Anyways yesterday it has finally started to warm up a bit here and my truck is Whining like its the PS pump, but I checked it and it was full of fluid. The fluid was dripping off the dipstick so I know it wasnt frozen, but I was thinking that it sounds like the pump is being starved for oil when at idle and turning. Has anyone ever heard of PS lines freezing and causing a blockage? What do you guys think I should do about it? I have been driving the truck hoping that if it is a frozen line - doubt it, that maybe with the engine heat it will help to thaw the lines...
Todays high is supposed to be 45 or so, so I guess I will wait and see what happens. Also - my serpentine belt has been making noise so maybe its just the belt tightened up with all this cold air and is causing strain on the pulleys?

A buddy of mine that runs a shop around here, says that when he has a vehicle come in with a whiny power steering pump, the first thing he does is suck out the fluid and replace it with Honda fluid. Says within the first minute the whine is gone.

Never heard of it freezing. You might want to just change it out. I've always used Red Line synthetic in my PS, whenever I change out the fluid.
