Question Question About Oil

Ever since I've had my truck, It's been ran on 5-30 Valvoline oil. Truck has 68,xxx miles on it. My question is can I swap over to a synthetic oil now like a Mobile One or should I stick with the regular oil? Thanks for your input...

How often do you change your oil?

I change the every 3000/3 month way... I've only had the truck for a year though so not all of the mileage is mine.

if you're doing regular oil changes (3000 miles for conventional oil) then there is no need to change to synthetic. Just make sure you use a good conventional oil and a good filter (don't cheap out on the filter, its the most important part IMO).

And I'd stay away from Valvoline, its a wax based oil. Conventional oils I would look at are Mobil 1 Clean 5000, Castrol GTX, and Walmart's Supertech.

AcDelco filters are pretty good. I personally run Wix filters, but I would also recommend Mobil 1 filters, Purolator Gold, and K&N Oil filters. Some of them are pricey, but they filter 99% of the oil vs. ~95% like the economy filters such as STP, Fram, and most house brand filters.

+1 on using a good filter and quality oil. I've been using the Mobil1 filters the last few oil changes. I used to use ACDelco until they discontinued the PF59 (I like the slightly extra capacity). As for conventional oils, Texaco Havoline used to be excellent 10 years ago when I ran it in my MonteSS, not sure about it any more though. You can switch to syn if you decide to though, and can go further between oil changes...5 to 7.5k or 6 months, whichever comes first. I like Amsoil and Mobil1.

I'm actually starting to think using conventional oil and high quality filter is the best option because you will be changing the filter more often. I'd like to see what an oil filter looks like after running synthetic oil for 7000+ miles. That being said, I use synthetic oil. I used mobil 1 5w30, then changed to royal purple 5w30, then royal purple 10w30, and now back to mobil one 10w30. After reading multiple bad reviews on RP, I decided mobil 1 synthetic was what I was gonna keep using. I switched to 10w30 because it provides better protection during the summer months, and IMO does no thin out as bad as 5w30

No it will not hurt to switch to a synthetic, the only real benefit would be longer times between oil changes with less breakdown in the oil. I used to run mobil 1 10-30 but just switched to Shaffers 10-30 which is a synthetic blend. Both are very good oils, but mobil 1 is more easy to find IMO. I have to agree, dont cheap out on an oil filter!!
