"Service Air Bag" warning
So, as I'm driving to work today, the Air Bag light comes on, and the message "Service Air Bag" pops up. I'm thinking...huh??
Yes, I did a search (haters). In every thread I've found regarding this, someone has always done something to trigger this (rough driving, steering wheel mods, bumper change, etc).
I have done NOTHING for at least 4 months, other than an oil change. Any reason this light would randomly come on? Air bags freak me out...I know a guy who had his deploy unnecessarily once who lost an eye because of it.
Thoughts? Safe to drive?

Tough to tell what's going on without getting a code out of it, could be any number of things that failed. It's "safe" to drive though (won't deploy randomly), as the system is disabled when the light is on. Just be aware that your SRS system is not functional if you get in an accident.

2 Questions:
1. Is a GM dealer the only place that can read this code?
2. What should I expect to pay for someone to read this code?

Had mine come on twice once was the sensor in the front and havent botherd to check the light the second time yet but when the system triggers a fault it shuts it down so they will not deploy....So i have been told

Final update: Dealer says it was a shorted-out air bag sensor on passenger side front bumper. $350 to fix They would not sell me the parts to fix it on my own, and no other local auto repair shop would mess with it.
Paid the truck off 2 months ago, and now little crap starts to break.

passenger side front bumper? I just yanked the front end off my 02 parts truck and didn't see anything that would resemble that. I Did see something like that in the middle under the A/C Condenser.
Can you get under there and find it and get the number off? Or tell me where you found it and I'll see if I have one.
