Default spare tire reel/cable

my truck came without a spare, just a broken cable. my mom had her 05 yukon at the tire shop and they said the thing was broken, the cabke was all twisted up. they eventually got it off, but are these spare tire holders a problem? much like the tail gate cables.

They seem to be a fairly common problem, I know when I tried to get mine off one day to do my body lift, it probably took me an hour to get the thing working, cable was twisted and all seized up, but once the cable is straightened it seems to work pretty good

It seems to be a greater problem in the northern states where salt is used in the winter. I had the cable corrode and break on my S-10 and the tire fell off. Luckily it was in my driveway. Yes, it's just like the tailgate cables.
