Default Starter Question '06 2500 6L

I had something really odd happen last weekend, and have not had the time to address it yet...While cranking, yes battery is fine, the motor acted like it backfired, then popped, leaving the starter lifeless...It spins, however the solenoid does not seem like it is engaging....I plan on removing the starter and taking a look maybe this weekend...

Questions: Anyone else seen this before, and does anyone have a "recommended" replacement starter they have used?

Many thanks in advance!

Sounds like the starter gear is chewed up. The solenoid only makes the starter spin, it has nothing to do with the actual engagement. Stock starter is a perfect replacement unless you want to drop $600 on a unnecessary high torque starter.

If it's just spinning you probably snapped the gear off the engagement mechanism, or you got really unlucky and broke the flywheel.

Thanks guys for responding....I will pull it this weekend and take a look, hopefully having a replacement in my hand! Business travels keep me from spending too much toy money, but I have a few weeks to catch up b4 I head out again LOL...
