My truck is about 5 months old w/ about 9000 miles on it. About a month ago, we started noticing a stale, musty smell in the truck. It smelled like cigarette smoke to me, but no one who has access to my truck smokes at all. It's never been smoked in. Anyway, we cleaned everything out, got every single item out of the truck, had the interior detailed and Febreezed. Turns out the stench appears only when the AC is blowing, which at this time of year, is all the time. It's progressed into a NASTY smell. It literally makes me sick and gives me headaches to drive it. I'm wondering what they would do if I took it in as a warranty claim. A Chevrolet service technician at the dealership my fiance works at gave us a Wynn's product that you spray in the vents to supposedly eliminate the problem. He said he's seen this quite a bit in newer trucks, but it was especially pronounced in 98 and older trucks. Has anyone heard of this or experienced it? I sure hope this Wynn's stuff works because it stinks (literally!) to have a 5 month old truck that you can't stand to drive

hehe alot of that is condensation build up.....smells pretty nasty.....but is not uncommon..since you are still under warranty, I'd go get the AC system checked out.....so it won't happen again....
I havent had a problem with it in this truck, but in previous cars, one thing I always did to get rid any ac odor, was turn the ac on full blast, with recycle set on, and spray some ozium in the intake vent under the dash infront of the passenger seat.....cleans out the system pretty well.....gets rid of the odors...

Mine's a GMC, but the guy at fiance's Chevy dealership said the first thing they will try is this Wynn's spray so I guess we'll try that and if it doesn't help, I'll take her in and threaten to hold their noses in front of the vents until they agree to fix it.
Thanks

This happened to me about the same time it did to you. It happened while I was away on vacation for a week. Came back and my a/c smelt like mildew while it was on.
I ended up mixing regular bleach with water and while having the doors open and the a/c on high I would spray/pour it into the cowl panel just infornt of the windshield. I then sprayed a little in the vents on the inside with the air off.
I had to do it twice in a weeks time. The second time I was more liberal. I have not had a problem since.
Good luck.
I didn't want to take it to a dealer and have them play around with it for 2-3 days with something I figured I could fix in 30 min. If not then I would have taken it in.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. Knowing dealerships, they'll tell me the truck being lowered has something to do with it and refuse to warranty it anyway

My truck does the same thing, it is more noticeable if the truck has been parked on a small incline for awhile. I remember reading a TSB awhile back with a fix for this but I never brought my truck in. The TSB calls for a small
heating element being installed where the water
accumulates and this will keep the moisture from
building up and causing the musty odor. I can't remember where I saw it... Has anybody had this done to their truck

i did what time warp did before on my '00 silverado.
put the a/c on full blast, buy a bottle of lysol disinfectant (a good smelling one) and sprayed it into the outside vents by the wiper blades...
i actually saw this done on a car tv program.
it worked pretty well with mine, and it smelt good for a couple of days; and when the lysol wears off, it doesnt stink anymore.

There is a cabin filter installed on most newer trucks, its in the heating/ac case behind the glove box. Its accessed by a little panel that unbolts under the dash. I replace those filters when trucks come in with the musty AC odor. You can also not use "max" or recirculate and that seems to prevent the odor from occuring (less moisture).
There is also a evaporator core cleaner and protective coating that can be applied in addition to a time-lapse blower module which dries the evaporator core 20-30 minutes after you shut the truck off. Warranty will cover anything it takes to fix it, at least in this part of the country...
