thats kinda what i was thinking myself, the fact that it doesnt disengage...i know if i use 4wd it take a second or two of coasting with the clutch in(for me) before the 4wd light goes out...

I used to have my doubts on the subject of "does it shift out of 4wd". In my case it's irrefutable. If I do it to soon the 2wd light comes on and I light the rears up. I don't know if the front axle unlocks but it definitely quits pumping power to all 4.

i find it weird that some guys push the button and it'll light up the rear tires on the 1-2, but others, like parish, it stayed in 4wd...

It shouldnt disengage while power is being applied!!! If it does, thats strange. I had a manual shift, and ran the whole track in 4hi the couple of times I ran in 4wd. Quit doing that cause with the front diff transfering power to each tire, the wall got too close too quick!!! Get some big slicks and just run in 2wd

Engaging and disengaging power through the transfer case is just what the Auto-track transfer case was designed to do.

What I'm doing works pretty well, I think I will continue to do just as I have dozens of times.
