Man honestly I wouldn't even worry about the timing chain. The one on my 82k 4.8 is just as loose as the brand new one I put in during the 6.0 swap

Its always a good idea to turn the engine over with a breaker bar, any mistakes are evident when the engine cant be turned by hand. But said mechanic was not around to share that tip lol

Mine took a better part of an afternoon. Longest part was doing the springs.

If you have high miles I would change it, 223k chain was stretched out enough to do this.

droping the oil pan a bit to get the pump off sound tricky any thoughts on doing this ?

Dropping the pan is not tricky, just nasty, I suggest goggles.

Yeah def change it if there is high mileage but if not I wouldn't worry with it. Dropping the pan really isn't all that hard just messy like TX said

Yeah just check it before you change it, mine was tight buuuut I only had like 68k on mine. And yeah the pan is messy...my driveway can attest to that.
