Towing question?
I will be towing a car trailer with a car behind my 00 GMC 1/2 ton 2wd ECSB 5.3 and wanted to know if you still leave it in overdrive when towing. I know you should have the tow/haul button on but did not know if it should be in 3rd?
Thx.

Unless you're driving on absolutely flat ground, I would recommend leaving it in "3" ("D" I guess in older trucks). Otherwise the transmission will keep shifting in and out of overdrive, due to the tall OD gearing (0.696:1). This not only creates a lot of heat, but the 3-4 clutch pack is one of the 4L60E's weak points. Good luck on your trip, and have fun!

If you're in the flatlands leave it in OD and hammer down.In the hills if it hunts and shifts between 3rd and OD excessively put it in 3rd.I would just push the tow/haul button and let the truck do it's thing.

I tow in 3rd and I use tow haul. It is pretty flat here in East Texas but when I try to tow in OD even the slightest change in throttle position or incline in the road it starts shifting in and out of OD.

Thanks for the input. I picked up the car today and used OD with the tow/haul on and it worked great. it wouldn't kick into OD unless it was around 60 mph or over. The 5.3 really susprised me as it towed it great. It's not real hilly around here but it tows alot better than my 5.7 TBI.
