The heavy duty covers are a must with a manual IMO. The jack bolts that contact the carrier brg caps along with the cover provide support to keep the pinion from seperating from the ring gear under heavy loads like clutch dumps. When the ring and pinion push away from one another they mesh on the outer edge of the teeth and break.

I've had 3.73, 4.30 and now 5.13's with my T56.
My opinion on gears with a T56 is if you have tires in the 29-30" range go with 4.88's and tires in the 32" range 5.13's.
With 32" (275/55-20's) tires and 5.13's i'm doing 1900 rpm in 6th at 70mph and first gear launch is perfect.
