As I mentioned on the first page, in AMSOIL's case the price increases have been caused by the cost of manufacturing going up. Everything from the plastic bottles to the cost of getting raw materials to the plant in Superior, WI by rail and road. Not to mention the cost of the suppliers manufacturing costs going up which in turn is passed on to the customers (AMSOIL) when they purchase materials.

Unfortunetly it seems Mobil1 is not a true synthetic oil, i.e. ester based.

Is Mobil 1 with SuperSyn Technology a fully synthetic motor oil?

Yes, it is. To meet the demanding requirements of today's specifications (and our customers' expectations), Mobil 1 with SuperSyn uses high-performance fluids, including polyalphaolefins (PAOs), along with a proprietary system of additives. Each Mobil 1 with SuperSyn viscosity grade uses a unique combination of synthetic fluids and selected additives in order to tailor the viscosity grade to its specific application.

note: not ester based

Chevy High performance has a interview with Lee Culbertson from Royal Purple. He explains all about true syn vs fake synthetics.

"A popular misconception is that synthetic oil is magically created in a beaker. The truth is all oil comes in a natural state, and all oil starts as crude. The only difference between mineral and synthetic is how that the crude is processed. Synthetic oil is highly refined crude with molecules that have been realigned by man."

basically the impurities are removed during the refining.
