Those compressors like to be circulated once in a while to keep some oil in them so they don't seize up AFAIK. It might be a good idea to run it once a month or so to keep it lubricated.

It does have the auto feature but I never use it. I just turn it full clockwise for hot and turn the fan on. The AC light is off and the defrost is off but I still get that drag on the engine as if the compressor is coming on and I hear it click. So,...I know the compressor is kicking on I just dont know why.

What vent setting do you keep it on? If you keep it on the fowared vents or the floor it shouldn't kick on if not needed. If you select defrost, or even bi-level which is the floor and defrost, the compressor will run. I have manual controls, if I turn it even one click off the floor towards the defrost the compressor will kick on.
