let me put it this way, my buddies truck, with a bigger cam, less flowing heads, and no custom computer, with a posi, and 3.73's with a manual, would destroy mustangs around town. the torque curve on a tbi motor is insane, you'll never touch it with any other type of system. and i've found street power is best used as torque. he since has decided to go bigger and better, and now has a lightened lower end, and better heads, waiting to be installed in his new motor...... and we're deciding if he's gonna stick wtih tbi or not. the only other option he's thinking about is tpi, but obviously with aftermarket stuff, so it'll breath to 5500. tpi makes better power, so if you have the knowledge..... and the money, time, patience, garage.. we're thinking that's the way to go... for serious, serious power. but if you wanna buy a truck, and mod the **** out of it. tbi is cheap, comparitively. i like the torque of it, great seat of the pants feel. it all depends on how much you know. tbi is simple, tpi conversion is much more complicated. my buddy's a mechanic, and i've been a gearhead my entire life, messing with this stuff.. so we're not afraid, but i cant' reccomend it to someone who doesn't know alot about fuel injection and computer systems. tpi is a different ballgame, and we dont know about it yet, so we haven't decided.

honestly.... buy a manual truck, convert it to an ls1/ls2 and a t56, end of story, throw a supercharger and some nitrous on it, and have like 500+hp to the ground, and you'l be cookin with gas.

well... you won't have a truck wtih more than about 350hp/400ftlbs without converting to different fuel system. I don' tknow much about the 96-98 trucks with vortec sfi..... so i can't say what they'll do, but i bet one of those trucks, with a big cam, a supercharger, and juice, would get you maybe where you need? but juice and superchargers are just about as technical as a swap/conversion....... it's all a learning process man. i'll be honest, tbi is a good place to start, because it's simple, but this board can help you a lot with ls1 type motors, and boltons on these, produce a larger net hp rating..... but remember, these trucks are a lil heavier. If you can, buy like a 2000 5.3 shortbed truck, and go to town with every bolt on under the sun that you can afford, and eventually swap in a 6.0 (direct swap) and forced induction, with some nitrous, and you'll be lovin life, and buying lots of tires..
