That's weird because I've been with Toyota/Lexus since 92 and the majority of our sludge (or "gel" as Lexus calls it ) has been with the V6's I've been with Lexus for the past 6+ years though, so if the Toyota 4 cyls have been affected in that time I may not be aware of it. Lexus has never had a 4 cyl in it's lineup until the new 2010 HS250H Hybrid. Whatever the case, we've figured out that the PCV system is at fault, and our gel SPA (Special Policy Adjustment) includes installing new valve covers with redesigned PCV passages, as well as replacing valve seals, cleaning the oil pump pickup, etc. It makes perfect sense though...either way, my family's Toyotas get a new filter every 5k now. FWIW, both my mom's 99 4cyl Solara and ex-wife's 03 Matrix looked perfect underneath the valve covers at 65k and 92k respectively...of course they've both had perfect maintenance records, first with conventional Havoline, and later with Mobil1, before switching to Amsoil

One thing I have noticed with the Ea0 oil filters is that with my truck at 4k miles the oil is STILL a nice golden brown color. When I was using regular paper media oil filters it was black by 4k. Their great filters!
