Why is it bad to hit the rev limiter?

They get that from watching the pro motocross racers on 250 four strokes. Instead of upshifting one more time when there is only 20 feet left before it's time to brake, the motocrossers just bounce it off the limiter for a half second. Then the kids in the audience go home and drive their 1995 Acura Integra VTec like that. Nobody is realizing that the factory-sponsored pro racers probably get a new motor every week.
