Why does the engine power down?

Why does the engine power down?
My friend has a 2004 GMC crew cab 2500HD, gas engine, 4x4, with about 170K miles. When he is driving the engine will just power down at times and he has to pull over and turn the truck off, reset it, and start it back up. It does not do it all of the time and went about a month with doing it. Strange stuff! Any ideas on what might be causing this?

This could be caused by countless things. Is the check engine light on? If it happens once a month that makes it really hard to diagnose. A common failure when hot is the crank sensor. But normally they do not restart until cooled down. Make sure the battery cables on the inside are clean and tight.

I had a similar issue with a 2001 it would just shut down going down the highway. Dealership tech said the problem was some loose connection in the door wiring harness, causing the security to shut down the truck. I don't know if that's the truth or not but after he worked on it I never had the problem again. May be a place to start until someone else chimes in.

Had this problem this morning. The dash said reduced engine power and the engine light was on. The truck continued to run but only at an idle. I shut the truck off 3 times then it ran like normal but the engine light was still on. Any help would be appreciated.
