Default Will this kill my fuel pump?

I just finished installing my walboro intank and it took two tries to start my truck. I traced the problem to the fuel pump not holding pressure when it is off. If I put the key forward and leave it a few seconds then turn it on, it starts just fine. Will this hurt the pump or am I OK. I will never again remove the fuel tank. Took 4 hours to do the whole thing start to finish. I also couldn't make the sock fit on the outside so I put it inside the canister. Drove around at WOT and it works great.
