I'm the one that 08chevy was arguing with. And for the record, I never said it was gonna help my truck run faster or have a positive influence on performance with JUST adding a 160 thermostat. I have a set of long tubes and a tranny cooler on hand fixing to go on the truck and I have a stall on order. I mentioned to him that the 160 would help keep a cooler running motor. For $20, not a bad investement if you ask me. And I'll be getting the truck tunned once everything is bolted up. Thanks

I personally wouldn't run a lower t-stat as these engines need to run at higher temperatures to burn off condensation in the oil.

Put the 160* t stat in, and you'll be safer running a more agressive tune.
I second every word of this the running cooler is better on all components from wiring, to piston rings and the only performance would come from sliding a little more timing in with out detonation.

Any reason why you disagree?

The IAT is measured at the MAF, and the only way that number differs from ambient is from heat soak by idling for a period of time. 10 degrees cooler coolant is not going to make the engine bay cooler and make any difference in engine IATs in my opinion. That would be more dependent on what kind of intake you're running.

The temperature of my header primaries read around ~400 deg Fahrenheit, what difference is 180 vs 200 deg coolant temps going to make?

Aeroforce Gauge: http://www.aeroforcetech.com/products_interceptor.html

Yes, several reasons.

First off I need to say that I am speaking from experience. I have almost 20 years as a GM Master Technician. So you are not talking to a rookie.

Generally speaking the MAF sensor is closer to the upper radiator hose than it is to the exhaust manifold or header.
I have a Aeroforce digital gauge that I watch very closely. An overall lower coolant temperature would create a lower under hood temperature. If you think your under hood temp is the same as ambient I would direct you to compare your MAF temp and the display on the rearview mirror. I think you will find a significant difference.
