I think you'll run into issues with those in a fog housing. Even the new round housings will be damaged by that fog lamp. According to the information, the LED pairs in that assembly are being driven at 105%, meaning a huge heat load and shorter-than-rated lifetime. 50K hours? Think more like 1.5K hours, with a steep output drop. Maximum rated power for one 1512 CXA is 24w. Two of them back-to-back is 48w, with significant heat dissipation issues on the eBay heatsink. Also, the light reflectance is going to be terrible, since the chips are 115* viewing angle, meaning you've got two 75* black holes on the sides of your beam pattern.

If you're looking for an LED retrofit, look at these units:

I haven't used these myself (but I've bought many of their other LEDs) but if you notice the heatsink and core is outside the light housing, not inside, and the chips used have a much larger contact patch with the transfer surface.

If you're not looking to spend that much but want better quality than the eBay lights, check these out:

Awesome thanks for the heads up. I never thought about the heat sink and contact area being inside the housing, I guess I never noticed it in the pics. I've got HID's right now and have been looking into alternatives because I don't really care for them. I happened to run across those eBay led's while I was looking for something else. I didn't know that they made them for headlights. Thanks for pointing me in a better direction.

Yeah, LEDs are very sensitive to heat buildup. The thermal efficiency gets lower the higher the LED wattage, with a 15w LED COB having roughly double the light/heat efficiency as a 24w chip.

The 1512 CXA's are designed for being mounted in high bay lights, flood housings or other spaces where a massive heatsink is possible. Their maximum output can only be acheived it they are regulated and cooled well enough to stay under 150 degrees Fahrenheit. On such a small heatsink like the eBay version, it's quite possible to see chip temperatures above 300 degrees Fahrenheit. This leads to discoloration, adhesion failures and dramatically shortened lamp life as the semiconductor rapidly decomposes. This is probably why they're using a $0.45 fan, not water-resistant, to cool the back of the heatsink (which is made of painted iron, not a good heat exchanger)

Got an issue with one of my fog lights not turning on all the time on the passenger side. I'm going to try and remount the ballast in a better spot and see if that helps. If not, I guess I'll be ordering the relay kit for the fog lights.

I love the 4300k from DDM though. They are white/clear and don't have a blue tint to them so you wouldn't be able to tell that you have HIDs or Silverstars once they are warmed up.

I had hell with my hid's. I ended up with a reley then i made one with bigger wires and a better reley. Still didnt work. I ended up with 5 sets of hid kits befor i found a good set

Haven't had an issue so far with DDM. I think it's more of a problem with low wattage in that bulb as it always looked just a tiny bit dimmer than the other fog light. Possibility that it has lower watts and the ballast can trigger on all the time. I'll work on it and report back.

Anyone else have this issue?
