5.3 09 k&n?

Rats. Thanks for looking it up. I was hoping it kept the slab-style filter. Looks like it just had some kind of piece of plastic that did away with the MAF in the airbox lid problem but was identical to the 07-08s. Must be a redesign coming now that the 2010s are being built. I want to keep the stock airbox, I just want to get a semi-sane tube between it and the throttle body.

Looking a some of these pictures I see the filter exposed to underhood heat which means these are not Cold Air intakes. You going to get colder air using he stock intake. The filter under the hood is going to suck in heat and that means less H/P, colder air means more H/P.
Some of these should be called Hot Air Intakes. THe K&N intakes with seals etc might be a little better but are still going to suck in hot engine heat. What most people think is more power is all just noise coming from the filter sucking air under the hood and that air it's sucking.....you guessed it...hot air.
A new tube on the stock box might do something and a less restrictive filter than the stock paper one might help a little more for those looking for true power and possible MPG gains.
Here is a true cold air intake but what the gains really are I don't know, I do know it's not very pretty.

Notice claims say a programmer is needed for what they claim and a 1-3 MPG gain, that's some expensive $$$$ for 1-3 MPG plus the cost of the programmer.
I think a tune and headers would gain you more, if you after looks and noise from the intake the CIA's will work very well. What sucks about the people making this stuff is that they are not honest with the consumer about the claims and don't tell us anything about how they get those numbers. We all want nice looking stuff also and there is nothing wrong with that......the claims that are made most of the time are just BS in the normal driving enviroment.

1968 - I agree with you in part - but HP and MPG gains dont lie - Personal experience. Additionally I would add and do agree with you - yes you have to block off the engine heat - most do - unless you install just an exposed filter with no shielding or box etc...
alot of the air is coming from in and around the head light area as the veh gets up to speed - more speed more cold or colder air will come thru in that area. have to remember any engine is an air pump - nothing more - more air in - more air out. CAI's in my opinion work and work well. At least they do for me. My HP and MPG are up. My 2003 with mods below knocked down 21 on a cruise to Columbus at 75 MPH. My .02

I have seen another intake by volente ( think that's how its spelled) that has an extention that picks up air from below. The problem with this and others like the one i posted above is that the ram air effect can nullify at speed due to intake restriction and air pressure. Taking in air from the head light area and where the factory has placed intakes cab be a better idea since they tend to be low pressure areas at speed.
I have talked to tuners before making my plung and one of the problems they have seen with newer trucks is that for some reason not all computers are learning the new airflow amounts. I know of one person that had his K&N cold air intake on and the computer was telling the tuner that it was flowing 8% more!!! That is a great number but the trucks computer was not doing anything with it. A total waste of money unless you also put out for tune in this trucks case.
I am thinking a new filter and tune will be what I do, my only issue is the tune possibly affecting warranty on a brand new truck.

What about the intake tube leading back to the throttle body? Is it seperate from the MAF? Could you use the stock air box and mod it for additional airflow, use a good free flowing replacement filter and the use an AirAid Modular Intake Tube in place of the stock tube with all the silencer baffles??
