6 speed vs 4 speed
#21
Ended up getting a 2010 5.3 reg cab 4x4 with 3.42's and the 6 speed. I am very happy with it so far. I think the 6 speed was definitely worth it. Now we'll see how long I can hold off before I start modifying it and void the warranty.

i looked at a couple 2010 and the two i looked at had 3.08 gears, thats why i went with the 09, w/ 3.42's 5.3 6 speed. dealer said the newer 2010 trucks have 3.08 gears.. i love mine too. tune time.. lol..

The 700R4, 4L60, 4L60E, 4L65E, 4L70E etc... are all Pieces of **** based on a almost 30 year old design that they kept putting a new coat of paint on but were always a step behind the power output of the engine they were put on. But to make them worse, the gear spacing just sucks. I like the 3.06 first of them but the second gear needed to be lowered a little and they never did. ...
So how much does it actually cost to go from '09 4A - '10 6A, is it $2k?
Lack of responses earlier could be:few saw this thread or if few have had the chance to compare the two, a variety of reasons.
I'd take a 6 spd in a heartbeat. graygmc said he believes the 6L80E is rated around 430 ft/lbs were the 4L60E is rated at 360 ft/lbs. Right there, it's a better tranny (+70 ft/ lbs), better fuel efficiency, performance, better ratios
betw gears.
3.08 are in newer ones for mileage as opposed to higher numerically from oler ones.

I ended up picking mine up for 25,500 out the door. It was a good enough deal that I never even priced out an 09. I think the 6 speed was worth it anyway. I can cruise around the streets at about 1100 rpms if I want to. Acceleration is good even when babying it because it gets through the gears fast enough. WOT with the 6 speed is fun too. It's definitely different driving a truck with so many gears though. Haha I have way too many years with an old 700r4 under my belt

You can still get 2010's and 11's with the 3.42's. It just seems it dealer to dealer. I've looked at some dealers and all they have is 3.08's and some that just carry 3.42's I wouldn't even consider 3.08's

I recently got to drive both a 2wd and a 4wd 2010 models with a 5.3, 6 speed auto, and 3.08s. I will just say with 3.08s the 2wd was tolerable at best. The bottom end even with the ultra low 1st just wasn't really there. In 6th it was running like 1550-1600 at 65 mph. The 4wd was worse, taller tires, more weight. It was even active fuel management. It would turn a whopping 1400-1450 at 65 mph. The only way it could get into V4 mode in that configuration would be down the side of a mountain with a tail wind. I would go with a minimum of 3.42s and if your only option is 3.08s either get ready to buy some 3.73s or keep it in 5th gear. I just don't get the logic of trying to lug an engine to death like that. Hell even diesels which make stump pulling torque extremely low don't turn those stupid low rpms like that going down the highway. A duramax 6 speed is at least in the 1600 range in 6th on a 4wd. They tried this in the 80s and they ended up with no power and no fuel economy. The 6 speed so far has done extremely well but if you can't get a decent set of gears to go along with it I would have a hard time justifying the jump from a 4L60E to a 6L80. Just my 2 cents.

What I'm trying to say/ ask is; to the folks that had a 5.3/ 4L60 and have graduated to the 5.3/ 6L80, what are your impressions? Would you do it again? Is it something that I have to have.................
