Just as an example, here's a couple pics of a stock 4L60E converter next to a Yank PT3200. You can see that it is a smaller diameter, and the body of the converter is also shorter(front to back).

They are usually smaller & lighter than an original converter, for performance. They also need to be able to bolt up to a wide range of styles and/or thickness of flexplates, both stock style, or aftermarket SFI, oreven billet flexplates. Most of the time, shims will be needed with an aftermarket performance converter, if you are using a stock flexplate.

Too bad you had to go through all that, and the 'verter was bad. At least the seller bought it back.
