Default Headers for the 6.2

I have a 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 ECSB 4X4 with the 6.2 engine. I will install some headers and get a dyno tune in the near future. Looking primarily at the Kooks and American Racing. I know there are others out there that are less expensive. Not trying to get into a pissing contest about foreign made verses US made. I will also get them coated. Looks like there are a couple of decisions to make. 1 3/4 or 1 7/8 inches tubes? Since I am not going to do any serious engines mods, I assume the 1 3/4 inches tubes are better for lower end HP/TQ. I do some off roading and low speed power is desired. Next is the Y pipe. The header companies do differentiate their Y pipes between the 6.2 and the other LS engines due to the 3.5 inch exhaust on the 6.2 engine. Do the 6.2 Y pipes actually have a 3.5 inch pipe after the Y or is it just a 3 inch pipe with the 3.5 inch connector welded to it? I know that sometimes the fitment can be a problem depending on the quality control of the header. I just had a significant fitment problem with another header manufacture on a C6. I do not care to repeat that adventure. All pertinent information is very much appreciated.

I have talked to a couple of reputable tuners and they have all been in agreement that 1 7/8 is the only way to go on the 6.2L. As far as brand I have only heard good things from the ARH Longtubes.

Just get the ARH.
You can get 1 3/4 or 1 7/8 and they will give you the correct y-pipe/cats to match the
rear flange.
1 7/8 seems the way to go with the 6.2, I notice no low rpm power or torque loss.

Here is my thought and what I'm going to do. A lot of people will disagree but it's what makes the most sense to me. It seems to me that me and you are kinda in the same boat, nice DD with some go. U can get pacesetter headers and y pipe for $500 compared to the 1 7/8 ARH or looks for $1500. To me the $1000 difference isn't worth the extra 5 maybe 10hp difference. With that extra $1000 I plan to get a circle d converter that will net me way better gains than the little extra size in headers. Yes I understand that here will need to be a few mods made to make the y pipe work but I can justify it for saving the $

That extra $1000 buys more than 5 hp, it buys a lot more quality.

It's not just peak power where the 1 7/8 shine, it's all the way thru the curve, you are really throwing your money away on the 1 3/4 for the 6.2, I have seen the difference from my truck which is stock, to an identical truck on the same dyno with 1 3/4 LT's and mine actually made same power.....

Thanks for the info. Sounds like the 1 7/8 are the way to go. In the Corvette world they tend to go with the 1 3/4 except for the LS7 and LS9 engines. Different stuff going on down stream with a Y pipe/single verses the true dual exhaust on the Vette. Very nice dyno numbers. I had my stock 4X4 dyno tuned on a Dynojet dyno about a year ago and only got 295 RWHP. I thought a 403 HP engine would get a bit more. I know that the transfer case sucks some additional HP. With a good set of headers I would hope to get into the 320 range. Thanks agian.

Will you be changing mufflers also? I had a 2009 cc 6.2L with ARH and magnaflows to begin with but the drone killed me and the truck was incredibly loud. After driving it 5 times I changed to some flowmasters which were still pretty loud. I have a truck on the way that I'm going to put longtubes on, but I'm not so sure I'm going to change much exhaust after that to keep the sound down. On my corvette I just put on longtubes and left the stock mufflers which have butterflies anyway. Quiet when cruising and loud when you want it to be.

Default Headers, mufflers, and the drone

I will leave the stock 3.5 inch muffler on. I did remove the small resonator that was aft of the rear axle. I do not want that drone. Right now the stock muffler sounds OK. With headers and high flow cats it should sound a bit louder, but I hope that the stock muffler will prevent the drone. You are correct about the stock C6 Z06 mufflers and the rpm activated butterfly valve. I also have the mild to wild switch so I can open and close the valve when I want. Quiet for cruising and loud when you want it.

Dawg,

Any fitment problems with the ARH headers?
