takes longer to gather the tools than it does to do the actual work.
on my 2000 1500 i just get 3 quarts.. it should be the same on your 08.
also the cover bolts should be 13mm, and you use a 3/8" ratchet or pull bar on the fill plug.

Don't even need a gasket. RTV will work fine. Take the cover off and let it drain. There's a Fill plug on the nose that a 3/8 ratchet pops into .
Put the RTV or Gasket on and put the bolts back in. then start pumping fluid into the fill hold until it gets up to the hole. Just be sure your on level ground.

Dont forget to clean everything as best you can with some brake cleaner. Most of the mess will be stuck to the magnet on the cover. Takes 20-30 minutes if you got all the tools together. If you have trouble getting the fluid back in put a length of 3/8 or so hose on the end of the bottle and squeez.

Here is something interesting, GM says for 07 trucks with 8.6 or 9.5 axle the torque on the cover bolts shows 30ft/lbs, drain plug at 24 ft/lbs, and do NOT re-use the cover bolts.
For same truck but 08, same axles, no mention of re-using bolts and torque has dropped to 20ft/lbs, fill plug at back remains at 24ft/lbs.
I'd post the information but the files are too big. Send me an e-mail if you want copies, these are out of GM service instructions.
