all driveshafts have a critical speed. the speed at which harmonics take over, this rpm is calculated by knowing length, material, diameter. google search critical speed and you will understand better. two piece driveshafts cut your length in half essentially making it much more stable at higher speeds

The new custom drive shaft is built and on its way tomorrow, lets see what happens next. Supposedly it can handle over 1000 HP. I was considering an aluminum shaft but the diameter would be to big, so steel it is.

Take a pencil and break it in half. That's a one piece shaft.

Now take the two halves and see how much harder they are to break. That's a two piece shaft.

Also...
The one piece aluminum DS that are 82" long have a low critical speed as well. The problem with the aluminum DS, in addition to the fact that they are thin walled Aluminum is that their diameter is so much bigger than a Steel one. The centrifugal forces acting on the DS wall on a aluminum DS add to it's vulnerability. However the wider the diameter of the DS the better it is for handling torque.
Hope that also helps.

On a side note, these kinda threads seem to pop up every 4 months, I think a sticky should be made for all newbie's.

Skeet, you're the only one that I know breaks a drive shaft going over the Ship Channel Bridge.

I had an 07 2wd xcab on the dyno, one piece 96 inch alum shaft.
had to shut it down, d/shaft shook real bad.

I think a lot of this can be cured with an high speed balance before hitting the dyno.
