Yeah, all these forums have tit useless m*r*ns trying to help by recommending the obvious things that 1) everyone knows (screwdriver tip), 2) are useless (spraying armor-all inside the column), 3) irrelevant (applying repairs from inapplicable vehicles) and suggesting repairs that worked on antiques of a different design.

And for the record, the "heavy spring" you call it, that's the upper bearing preload spring. Its in all tilt columns to provide a steady pre-load on the shaft bearing in all positions of the steering wheel. Without it the steering column would flop or bind depending on the position of the tilt.

Think someone with a stethoscope would know that.

Really? Did they "pre-load" it or actually "over-stress" it? Clearly the bearings cannot take the stress of the pre-loading.

How did that happen? It's because auto engineer designers are at the bottom of the engineering food chain, especially those at GM. Instead of making repairable assemblies, they start with a core assembly and they stack, tack and hang a dozen other sub-assemblies on and around it as after thoughts. The result is, you have to disassemble a dozen sub-assemblies to get down to the key components that they UNDER-DESIGNED to begin with.

I have worked with Auto engineers and they just get the junk out-the-door and rely on 10,000 auto forums for people to discover the repair info they refuse to share with customers.

Nice applicable signature.

No, I poured sand all over it and seated the inter race with a 20 lbs sledge hammer.

That's is an intermediate shaft...it slides out after you remove two bolts. It also has a TSB for the bearing.
