Default T-Stat temps...

I'm looking at adding a low temp T-Stat and wanting to ask a few opinions.

160 vs 180

Back in my younger days i added a 160* T-stat and fan switch on my 350tpi and it always stayed around 160* but i felt like my engine was over cooled? If that makes sense?

I know engines have to run at a certain temp for fuel to atomize, sensors to run correctly, etc...

I'm thinking about a 180 T-stat and having the tune adjusted..

Any ideas???

with 160 stat in my alminum 5.3 , i neer reached 160 not even 170 after full warm up

avg is arround 180 to be honest and it gets to 185-190 easy and to 200 some days but never heats up like the oem stat in dunes when the truck frame is sitting on the sand my truck used to over heat with the old stat but it never did after the 160 i love it. and my timing i think is alot better than none 160 trucks that my friends have

I got a 160 in my 6.0 and it runs around 174-190 temps. I've never seen it get over 190 even in 100+ deg temps.

IMO, get a 180... the LS engines were designed to run warmer. There's some technical explanation somewhere on here from one of the cooling system designers for the LS series. I know of many MANY 400-500+ vehicles running the stock t-stat

You could email your tuner and find out what he thinks.

Well I was thinking for longevity reasons too. 220* for a 100+k miles will burn things up faster than a 160* or 180*.

I've played around with lower temp thermostats on different cars over the years and don't think I ever really gained anything but faster use of fuel (lower fuel mileage).
