Default tach sticking????

Im driving down the road yesturday and my tach started jumping and sticking. So i put it in neutral and reved it and the tach went wayyy past 6k and I maybe reved it to 4k. It droped down to about 2500rpm's and now it sits there never goes below 2500rpm it seems like the needle spun because the tach still works fine it just reads about 2500rpm's more. Anybody eles ever have this happen?
