Have you ever installed a torque converter before? Are you sure it isn't just user error.
It was my first on a 4l60e, but I am a army mech so I have done a good few th400s and 4l80es its pretty simple you just turn it back and forth while pushing in until it seats. I put the stock one in about 4 times.

the TBSS converter will not raise the stall speed on a 5.3 truck.

Quick rundown on 4L60E converters.

2 versions, typically called the LT and LS style.

LT - 5.9" tall -fits 700R4 and early 4L60e's

LS - 6.5" tall - fits LS style engines. Late 4.3,4.8,5.3,6.0

The 5.3 and 6.0 take the same converter - TMBX 12"

The 4.3 and 4.8 are the same - TLBX 12"

The TBSS takes a TMBX, so same as a regular 5.3 and 6.0

The I6 4.2 TB takes a VJCX - 11" converter - this is what I start with on my 11"

Hope this helps.

The 4.8 and 5.3 converter will interchange. But might not be the same stall.
The TMBX is a 12" low stall ~1600. The TLBX is a 12" high stall ~2000.

No idea though what converter he was running though.
