Unhappy Tune on hold oil burn problem back

Well I was going to get a tune for my 5.3l after the race with the yota however today I checked the oil from just 1800 miles ago when it was just a 1/4 quart low and wouldn't you know it today the oil barley reads on the dip stick I think its like 2and1/2 to 3 quarts low. Looks like the new valve cover replacement only help for 7000 miles. We will seee if the dealer puts pistons and rings in like he said if the valve cover replacement did not work. I really think its time for DOD delete or even better a 6.2l.

Try running some of the pennzoil high mileage oil, and ream the **** of it. The oil control rings are stuck, and I have seen that oil help. The last thing you want is some dealership flat rate hack inside your engine. Changing those pistons and doing it right is a tricky deal.

Sounds like a good idea I may have to give it a try. However even if this works will the problem with the oil control rings sticking come back over time? Eny way thanks for the tip.

Yes it is caused by the AFM/DOD. I know it can void warranty if you turn it off, but if you can get away switching oil and turning AFM off it might be ok. Once you get 75+K miles the rings are pretty much trashed. AFM is a terrible thing and is pretty much worthless. I have done 6 piston and Ring replacements for the dealer on these.

I agree I wish GM could have got some mileage gain in some other way than turning off 1/2 the whole engine and recking a perfectly good 5.3l hate to see the engines get a bad rap over it. Well I may give this a try however im debating if I can afford to risk haveing the engine when the warrenty runs up in 3 years or when I hit 100k. Thanks agin for the help. have a good christmas.

Well I went to the dealer today that checked the oil and found it was 1 and 1/2 quart low. The dealer said that GM had a fix for the problem and that that where going to put some sort of splash guard in to stop oil from spraying on the piston when the 4 cylinder mode is activatid along with some other update from GM will see what happens.

I used to have to add at LEAST one qt between oil changes on my '07.
I bought it at 30,750 miles and it currently has 39,000 miles.

I'm about 3000 miles into the current oil change, and my oil hasn't gone down a bit.

Hopefully you're not too late for just turning the AFM off and not needing to replace rings.

You need the umbrella shield over the AFM oil relief valve in the pan and more than likely a new driver's side valve cover. You'll probably need pistons and rings too. Most of the oil consumption I've seen is oil digestion into the intake from the driver's valve cover drainback holes being plugged and vacuum drawing it into the intake and burning it. The other is oil rings stuck. The AFM oil relief valve is spraying oil straight up on the bottom side of pistons and cylinders with heavy amounts of oil that the rings can't scrap. The umbrella deflects the oil down into the pan. Most of the people that have the issues are the ones that like to change their oil by the oil life monitor.

Thanks agin for some answers. Here is what the dealer did to the engine on my recent visit back to the shop this past week. The Invoice states "Oil pulled through the pvc system or oil spray that is discharged from the AFM pressure relief valve within the crankcase. replace the left valve cover and install the new shield. and tighten the AFM valve per bulletin.Install AFM oil Deflector Rocker arm cover- Left bank and clean carbon from cylinder." Thay also mention puting a special sulotion in the engine for 4 hours to unstick the oil control rings.Enyway thats the list of what thay did to the engine I hope it works out.
