What r u hauling?
Hello truck world. I just purchased my first truck earlier this year and considering getting a 5th wheel. I have an 08 gmc sbcc w the 5.3l and 3.42 gears. The only mods I have are the vararam tri-power cai and magnaflow muffler. Im curious what types of items you guys/gals are hauling, what type of weight is the item, and do u feeling like u are pulling it safely? I'm reading about this blackbear tune, when should I consider this in relation to the type of weight I'm hauling. Thanks

I tow my car on a 18' car trailer, probably about 6k pounds, with 500lbs of crap in the bed with 4 people in the truck NO ISSUE! Could easilly pull more... I do have the 6.2L but only the 3.42 gear.

I pulled 10-12,000 lbs behind my 03 Yukon XL 5.3L many times. It had 4.11 gears. It pulled well with no issues.
If you going to use your truck, I would recommend some airbag helpers for the rear, and some better gears. 3.42's just aren't going to cut it. 4.11's will get the job done. Get a good tune, and go drag some houses off their foundations.

I totally agree Andy (sorry for the mix up) my father in law and I have been lOoking into buying a 5th wheel together. We dont want to spend a lot of money bc were not sure how much were gonna use it. My manual says I can pull 6600 lbs trailer weight but I'm convinced I should b able to pull more. Like I mentioned b4, I just bought this truck, so the sacrifice will come in the 5th wheel size and weight.

Agreed on the gears. The 5.3L makes power but it needs to spin a bit higher so with some shorter gears you can cruise at speeds that are reasonable with a big load. With our old 05 Yukon 5.3L and a 7900lb trailer loaded with all the gack nec for two month tours we had to fly. The only way it would tow is if the thing was spinning at least 3500 RPM or better and with the 3.42 gears we were just going too fast all the time. The new rig is an 07 Burb 6.0L and it tows the newer bigger trailer with ease at the speed limit. Its happy with much lower revs probably because of the VVT and the extra cubes. 3.73 gear too but 6 spd so revs lower while cruising. Shifts like crazy but it does a nice job.
However all said and done Im with the first response if you need a fifth wheel? Duramax ftw
